Google Biggest Investment in India Yet
Tech giant Google has announced its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in India, to be built in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The facility will integrate Google complete AI stack — including advanced data center capacity, cutting-edge AI infrastructure, renewable energy sources, and high-speed fiber connectivity — all in one place.
This $15 billion (USD) investment, spanning 2026 to 2030, marks Google largest-ever investment in India and aligns with the Government of India ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision aimed at accelerating AI-driven growth across the country.
According to a study by Access Partnership, commissioned by Google, the AI hub will generate nearly $15 billion in additional GDP over five years, thanks to increased AI and cloud adoption, and international collaboration between India and the U.S.
‘A Boost to India AI Mission’: IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
The announcement came during Bharat AI Shakti, a special event hosted by Google in New Delhi, ahead of the India-AI Impact Summit 2026.
Key attendees included Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, IT Minister Nara Lokesh, and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.
Ashwini Vaishnaw praised the initiative, saying:
“I thank Google for this $15 billion announcement. This infrastructure will significantly support our India AI mission. The Prime Minister vision of integrating technology into every aspect of life is becoming a reality. We must focus on re-skilling and upskilling IT professionals, and Google commitment to that goal is commendable.”
Chandrababu Naidu: ‘A New Chapter in India Digital Journey’
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu called the investment “historic” and said it would make the state a hub for innovation and AI development.
“Hosting India first gigawatt-scale data center and AI hub is a proud moment for Andhra Pradesh. This marks a new chapter in India digital transformation and will empower startups and businesses in the region,” Naidu said.
Thomas Kurian: ‘A Landmark Investment in India Digital Future’
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian emphasized that the Visakhapatnam hub reflects Google long-term vision for India digital ecosystem.
“This is a landmark investment in India digital future. By bringing advanced AI infrastructure at scale, we’re enabling faster innovation and inclusive growth,” Kurian said.
A Gigawatt-Scale AI Infrastructure Hub
The Google AI hub will include a purpose-built data center campus, providing gigawatt-scale compute capacity to power India digital ecosystem. The project will be developed in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Airtel and will utilize the same infrastructure that powers Google products like Search, Workspace, and YouTube.
This facility will offer high-performance, low-latency services to enable Indian businesses, startups, and researchers to build next-generation AI-driven solutions and strengthen India position as a global AI leader.
International Subsea Gateway to Connect India Globally
As part of this initiative, Google will also construct a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam. This will connect India to Google’ over two million miles of terrestrial and undersea cable network, enhancing India connectivity on the global stage.
The new cable landing will provide high-speed, low-latency internet routes, complementing existing gateways in Mumbai and Chennai — improving reliability, capacity, and digital access across India.
